Memories of Rhode
Island _____________________________________
"Thank you for
creating such a fabulous Rhode Island website!! I was born in Barrington
and graduated from high school there, but have lived in Maine since
college. I still have many connections there even though my parents have
passed away. I always love coming "home"! One of my first
clues to our odd RI vernacular was to ask for a coffee cabinet when I
arrived at college...and when people looked at me with insult in their
eyes and asked "what???" I realized we Rhode Islanders are a
breed alone. I still love visiting my friends who have a very thick
accent and say "sangwich" like I used to when I lived there. I
had to learn to say sandwich, scallops, coffee and hot dogs correctly so
I didn't get ridiculed here in Maine...I still trip up on occasion! I
still have quite an accent after more years than I care to tell you!!
People always ask me if I came from New York.....how insulting! Adrienne Angelo
Fond memories of Rocky Point. Friend of family had small cottage. What a treat to visit and walk to beach. Probably around 1937 or so. I know it was before the '38 hurricane when the monkeys escaped from the zoo and lived in the wild around the park. J. Welch
During the 1950's, my father was
the pastry chef at Tops Gaylord diner on North Main St. in Providence.
During my teens, I would assist my father. The bake shop was a small
building behind the diner. The diner was owned by Charley Samaras before
it went bankrupt in 1959. Nick - nterrenc@yahoo.com
Hi Ray, I will say you sure put a lot of time and effort into your Website. it is the best one I have seen from this state. My days go way back with Rocky Point Amusement Park, in Warwick. What a nice place to relax and have a full day of fun. Going to Rocky Point and just walking down the fairway was a thrill, to see all the smiling faces on people. Then the rides were moderately priced, and every one enjoyed them. Then the Dance Hall, (The Paladium), what a nice place to go dancing and have fun. The clamcakes and chowder, was the best . I ran a boat in the bay, and that dock, even though it was rickety, and in poor shape, I pulled up my boat many times ,just to get the Clam cakes and chowder, I fished for bass all around Rocky Point, and believe me, I got my share of the good sized bass. I also remember the night I got stranded on the rock, just off the land there. The tide came around in back of me, and all except about three feet of the rock was showing with me on it. That was a long fishing experience. After a few years, we had our Grandchildren from Florida visit us, and we spent a lot of time at Rocky Point, with the rides, and fun, there was no going home early. This group from Ca. played the outside show, and it was called (The Parachute Express). well, the music was soft to the ears, and smooth, Two years in a row, we attended those shows, not knowing they were playing. The Florida grand children was thrilled. Then, they closed the Rocky Point Park, what a shame, and even today, it's a vacant spot in Warwick. Your Website couldn't of picked a better song for the Rocky Point Website. (The Strawberry Blonde) I walked three miles to see that in the Palace Theater in Washington Park back in the early 1940's, that was a great movie too, and that song, really hits bottom with me. I play it all the time on your website. Living in Warwick, most of my childhood, I had plenty of excitement with the Hillsgrove Roller skating rink, Oakland beach, amusements, and rocky Point. It was a great place, and it is solely missed by all Rhode Islanders. Ray, Thanks for the space.
